Telerentgenography: features and advantages of diagnostics

Teleradiography is a diagnostic method that provides a life-size lateral or direct image of the skull and dentoalveolar system. Unlike conventional X-rays, the tube is placed at a considerable distance from the patient’s head.

The main advantage of a teleradiograph is the ability to measure angles and distances between different anatomical points on the skull and face. This allows an accurate assessment of the jaw relationship, the position of the teeth and the facial profile.

The method is indispensable when planning orthodontic treatment, especially for bite correction. With its help, the doctor can determine the type of jaws, their position relative to the base of the skull, and the inclination of the teeth.

What a TRG scan shows

A TRG scan (teleradiograph) shows:

  1. The shape and size of the skull and their relationship to each other.
  2. The teeth and their inclination in relation to the jaws and each other.
  3. The condition of the temporomandibular joints and their position.
  4. The soft tissues of the face – the contour of the nose, lips, chin.
  5. Upper respiratory tract, including nasopharynx and larynx

Based on the TRG image, a treatment plan can be drawn up, for example, to align teeth.

Indications for teleradiography

Telerentgenography is performed in these cases:

  1. Planning orthodontic treatment for children and adults, especially in complex cases of bite disorders.
  2. Monitoring the effectiveness of orthodontic treatment.
  3. Preparing for surgery if surgical correction of jaw position is required.
  4. Diagnosis of temporomandibular joint pathologies that may affect the mandibular position and bite.
  5. Assessment of facial soft tissue to bone ratio in planning complex treatment.
  6. Investigation of the causes of respiratory distress, especially in children with suspected upper airway obstruction.
  7. Assessment of craniofacial development in children with congenital anomalies.

TRG is also prescribed when planning prosthetics in complex cases.

Types of TRG scans

Telerentgenography can be performed in various projections:

  1. Lateral (lateral) TRG. This is the most common type of X-ray. It shows the profile of the patient’s skull, which allows you to assess the relationship of the jaws, the inclination of the teeth, the position of the soft tissues of the face and other important parameters.
  2. Direct (frontal) TRG. An anteroposterior projection image to assess facial symmetry, detect lateral displacement of the mandible, asymmetry of the dental rows and other abnormalities.
  3. Axial TRG. A horizontal projection in which the X-ray beam is directed from top to bottom through the skull. It is rarely used.
  4. TRG in 3/4 projection. Intermediate variant between lateral and frontal projections. It is used in specific cases for better visualisation of individual cranial structures.

These types of scans doctors prescribe both independently and in complex. To make an appointment at our clinic in Odessa, please call the phone number listed on the website. You can also see the price of our services and reviews.

How teleradiography is performed

In our Dent-House Family Dentistry clinic in Odessa, a TRG scan is done like this:

  1. At the appointment, the patient is asked to remove all metal objects – earrings, chains, glasses, hairpins.
  2. The patient is positioned in front of the X-ray machine. The patient’s head is fixed in the correct position. It is important that the patient does not move during the scan.
  3. The radiographer leaves the room or takes cover behind a protective partition and takes the picture.
  4. The procedure itself takes just a few seconds. With digital technology, the image appears immediately on the computer screen.

With modern devices, the patient receives a low radiation dose. The procedure is comfortable and painless.
