Myography at Dent House
Teethan
The Teethan apparatus is entirely manufactured in Italy and is a computerised system for digital analysis of occlusion in a simple and immediate manner.

Teethan® consists of four wireless EMG sensors with active electrodes, unique in their kind due to their light weight, compact size and the accuracy of the data obtained. The method is completely non-invasive for the patient, the sensors are fixed via disposable gel electrodes to the surface of the masseter muscles, the measured data is transmitted via Wi-Fi to a receiver inserted into the USB port of a computer. The data is captured and transmitted in real time via a specialised software interface. Teethan® analyses the masticatory muscle activity to quantify the effect of the occlusal condition on the patient’s neuromuscular balance.
By performing two tooth compression tests (with and without cotton rolls), each lasting 5 seconds, basic indicators of bite status can be obtained:
– Assessment of contraction symmetry in a pair of identical muscles;
– assessment of the position of the occlusal centre of gravity;
– Assessment of mandibular rotation in the horizontal plane;
– assessment of the total muscular work done when clenching the teeth (directly related to the vertical size of the biting object, the presence of nociceptive reflex, bruxism);
– Assessment of asymmetry between the left and right sides.

Myography (ENMG, EMG) is a bioelectrical examination technique designed to diagnose the condition of the nervous system and skeletal muscles.
Main indications for prescribing myography in dentistry
This procedure is designed to determine the individual characteristics of the occlusal balance of the dento-alveolar system, as well as to identify the peculiarities of the jaw muscles. It is prescribed in the following cases:
- in craniomandibular trauma and congenital deformities;
- for inflammation in the jaw area;
- in preparation for dental restorations and implants;
- in dental defects and bite anomalies;
- for certain periodontal pathologies;
- for paresis and paralyses of the facial nerve.
Myography is also used as a method of checking the quality of dental treatment being performed.
The surface electromyography used in Dent-House dentistry is based on the principle of syncromyography, i.e. comparison of signals obtained from two tests:
- clenching the teeth with cotton rolls inserted between them;
- compression without the use of rollers.
Data acquisition is carried out through special electrodes of the myograph, which are placed on specific areas of the face corresponding to the anatomical location of the masticatory muscles.
The results are analysed using specialised software and allow doctors to obtain accurate information about the masticatory muscles and anatomical features of the patient’s dentoalveolar system.
How myography is performed
At the Dent-House Family Dentistry Clinic, this procedure is performed in a comfortable environment and does not require any prior preparation. The patient sits in a comfortable chair, the doctor places electrodes on certain facial areas and fixes them.
During simple tooth clenching operations, the myograph records two types of signals: the state of the muscles, teeth and jaw at rest and in motion. All information is transmitted to the myograph and after computer processing is printed out to determine further treatment tactics, taking into account the individual characteristics of the patient.
