Microprosthetics is a section of modern orthopaedic dentistry, which includes the placement of microprostheses, namely inlays, onlays, veneers and lumineers.
Its main function is to restore the aesthetics of teeth with minor damage, and in case of significant tissue loss – to restore and fix the bite. Inlays and onlays are constructions in the form of fillings made of more durable materials.
In dental practice they are made of metals (gold, silver-palladium alloy), ceramics (press-ceramics, zirconium oxide, porcelain), plastics and composite materials. The main advantages of ceramic microprostheses, unlike plastic and composite ones, are aesthetics.
They convey a natural, saturated colour due to the denser structure of the materials. The biocompatibility of ceramic inlays with the hard tissues of the tooth ensures their durability and wear resistance. The constant volume of the inlay and its precise marginal fit prevent the development of secondary caries. They also eliminate plaque attachment due to laboratory processing, which makes the ceramic surface smoother and more resistant to bacteria.
Veneers, lumineers and ultra veneers can be combined as a type of thin onlays that can restore the aesthetics of the smile, eliminate cracks, chips, interdental gaps or darkened tooth enamel. Their thickness can vary from 0.3-1.5 mm. Most of the fabrication is done with ultra-strong pressed ceramic. And with these types of designs, no major tooth preparation/recessing is required.
For the best results in aesthetic dentistry, an individual, appropriate approach to each patient’s requirements is required. The professionalism, creativity and extensive knowledge of the doctor will help to fulfil all wishes and achieve a flawless outcome.
